About the campaign
Elizabeth (Libby) Scott Hankins, born June 16,1993, was diagnosed at the age of 2 with cystic fibrosis. She spent her entire life receiving breathing treatments and physical therapy, all while having to take numerous pills every day. Through the many hospitalizations and obstacles that have come her way, Libby stayed incredibly positive. Even though she had CF, CF didn't have her.
Libby spent her high school years cheerleading, and followed that passion into college where she cheered for the University of West Alabama for 5 years. In February 2016, she was accepted into the lung transplant program at Duke. Then on April 17, 2016, Libby received the call of a lifetime: she was getting new lungs!
Libby did great during the process. After receiving her lungs, she spent 10 months in Durham, North Carolina following up with routine doctors’ appointments. In December she finally came home to her hometown of Gordo, Alabama, and was able to spend Christmas with her family and friends with her brand new lungs!
Libby started student teaching at a local elementary school and was fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a special education teacher. Her passion for her kids was amazing, and she was looking forward to graduating in May.
This past February, Libby began to feel ill. She went to the local hospital who sent her by ambulance back to Duke. Once there, she found out she had Antibody Mediated Rejection (AMR) and a virus. After bravely fighting for her life for several weeks, Libby passed away on Friday, March 17, 2017 at the age of 23. We hope that this fundraiser honors Libby’s life and will provide relief and comfort to her family during this incredibly difficult time. Thank you for your outpouring of love and support.
