Forever My Baby You'll Be
In October 2014, Katie & Kevin Burns' oldest daughter, Emma was stillborn at 35 weeks. After losing her, they started Forever My Baby You'll Be to offer support, information & guidance to families experiencing a similar loss. About the campaign
In early October 2014, we could not have been more excited. Emma, our first child, was due to be born in 5 short weeks. Having received a healthy checkup just three days earlier, nothing seemed out of the ordinary on Friday, October 10th, other than Katie had not felt the normally active Emma kicking that day. Just to be safe, we went to the hospital for what we thought would be a routine ultrasound. Instead we were given the most devastating news expecting parents could ever hear – that our precious Emma did not have a heartbeat.
After delivering Emma, we were blessed to spend a couple of days with her. Soon though, we were faced with the reality of not only grieving our enormous loss, but also going home to an empty house and feeling hopeless and heartbroken. We left the hospital with empty arms and with no direction on how to begin to pick up the pieces of our shattered dreams as a family of three. In our darkest and saddest days that followed, we found solace in the advice, support and love from other families and couples who had been through a similar loss. We leaned on strangers who instantly became friends through our shared experience of grief. These new friends taught us so much about how to cope with our grief while still honoring Emma’s life, even though it was shorter than we could have ever hoped. It was through the bonds with other grieving parents that the idea of Forever My Baby You’ll Be emerged.
Our goal is that through FMBYB, we can reach out to those experiencing the loss of an infant as early as possible. We want parents to be armed with the knowledge and resources to honor their baby’s life. There are many wonderful organizations that help grieving families honor their deceased babies. However, in the midst of receiving such devastating news, parents are often numb and in shock. During that time, it is almost impossible for parents to research support services on their own, and hospital staff isn’t always aware of what’s available.
The goal of Forever My Baby You’ll Be is to provide resources to help parents prior to and through delivery of their baby, and in the days and weeks that follow. Stillbirths affect 1 in 60 pregnancies a year, approximately 24,000 in the United States alone. By supporting this campaign, you’ll allow us to continue serving families by providing informational pamphlets & workshops, counseling services, and support groups. Thank you for your encouragement and support!
