Ryan’s Case for Smiles – South Bend volunteers, who serve the Columbia City, South Bend, & Warsaw communities, sew and deliver whimsical pillowcases to our area children in the hospital and The Beaman Home.
It is not just a pillowcase – to a child the pillowcase shows that someone else cares about them. The cheerful pillowcases reduce anxiety, stress, and fear in an otherwise dreary, sterile, and sometimes scary hospital environment.
It is not just a pillowcase – to a child the memories which they may recall of their stay include hospital equipment, IV tubes, and numerous unknown health care providers checking on them during their stay may be negative and dreadful. Being in the hospital does not let a child be a child and is oftentimes confusing as to what is going on around them. The pillowcase provides a cheerful positive memory.
It is not just a pillowcase – to a parent, the bright pillowcase reflects the lessened anxiety and stress in their child’s eyes and relaxes the parent.
It is not just a pillowcase – to a healthcare provider, the happy pillowcase makes their job in caring for the child easier because of the relief of anxiety and fear.
It is not just a pillowcase - Ryan’s Case for Smiles has developed and addressed one of the first initiatives to address Pediatric Medical Traumatic Stress (PMTS) by partnering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) experts. Each pillowcase has an insert card directing caregivers to CopingSpace.org, a resource they find information and tools to fit their needs.
It is not just a pillowcase – it provides a ‘Smile’ to our area children in 7 area hospital, including Kosciusko Community Hospital, Parkview Hospital– Warsaw, Parkview Hospital – Columbia City, Beacon Memorial Children’s Hospital – South Bend, Beacon Memorial Hospital – Granger, St. Joseph Hospital – Mishawaka, A Rosie Place Hospital – South Bend, The Beaman Home and Fellowship Missions. Since October 2019, nearly 6,000 pillowcases have been delivered. “Feel Better to Heal Better”.

"Receiving a pillowcase from Ryan’s Case for Smiles made the stay in the hospital with a new baby more personal and special. To be able to take home a pillowcase that she can grow to use and may inspire her future dreams is an amazing gift! It also allowed Emma’s hospital bed to be more personalized as they used the pillowcase like a sheet, and it brought a little pop to the room." -- Alana O., Emma’s mother
"I just want to send a quick note thanking you for the pillowcase we received at Parkview Whitley County Hospital last week. Twenty-five years ago, I was diagnosed with childhood cancer. Even though I was raised in a hospital, I still struggle with health anxiety daily. Then I had a baby, and now my health anxiety is transferred to her. Last week she had to have her blood drawn because her blood count was so low, and they were testing for leukemia. I just sat there sick to my stomach and thought to myself, ‘how did my mom do this with me growing up’, and how does anyone go through this?
Afterwards, they brought out the pillowcases for my daughter to choose which one she wanted and told me your story.
So, thank you very much! Thank you for putting a smile on my face and my daughter’s. And thank you for making a difference.
P.S. – Her blood levels were totally fine! Praise the Lord!" -- Kylee R.
